Dr. Sang-Baek Chris Kang is in charge of the corporate data strategy at LG Telecom, Inc. in South Korea. Prior to join LG Telecom, he had worked for government IT research institute. He has done several IT research/consulting projects. He published a book on Windows 95 and served as a conference session-chair at PICMET. His current research interest spans on mobile data services, IP-TV, WIFI, and 4G adoption.

We sat down with Chris and asked him some questions.
  • Why did you decide to come to UM-St. Louis?
           UMSL is one of the best Universities in U.S. with respect to the quality of IS Faculty members.
  • Why did you pursue a career in information systems?
           IS has a great potential to influence management practices. If you are tech-savvy and interested in business practices, I would highly recommend majoring in IS.
  • What college classes did you find most useful to your career?
           Management of Telecommunication, Data communication
  • If you were in college today, what courses would you take?
           Statistics for Business
  • How did you continue your education after your first degree?
           I kept watching IT industry trends and tried to explore important qualifications for a specific IT management jobs.
  • How did you find your first job?
           I applied for IT research institute through an online job posting. There are plenty of good websites announcing IT job opportunities. Furthermore, colleagues or alumni will be your great assets to find unpublicized job openings.
  • In what non-academic activities did you participate in college that you would recommend to others (and why)?
           Fraternal ties and sororities can be good sources to make friends and colleagues.
  • How would you change your career if you had it to do all over again?
           I might be into the car industry!
  • What advice would you give to someone just starting in the field?
           Please try to enlarge your human networks.
  • Look into your crystal ball. What do you see changing in the IS field in the future?
           Large number of applications will be implemented based on Web 2.0 technology. These days even mobile industry strongly adopts Web 2.0 applications in its value chain! "Mobile" is the very future!
